Daily 5 Reading Workshop
This year, reading workshop will be broken into 3 half-hour segments consisting of The Daily 5 components. Students will have a choice on what type of literacy development they are working on during each time slot. Their choices are 1) Read to Self 2) Read with Someone 3) Listen to Reading 4) Word Work 5) Work on Writing Currently, students are working on their independent work "stamina." We have talked about what that means and how it should relate to our literacy development. We, as readers and writers need to be able to do things for an extended period of time, without giving up.The Daily 5 book notes that students in intermediate grades should be able to do between 30-45 minutes of uninterupted work during the literacy block. My goal is 30 minutes. At the beginning of the year it is usually around 10 minutes. This time allows me to meet with students independently, or in a small group setting. Much of the work during workshop for the 2014-2015 year will revolve around units of inquiry as part of International Baccalaureate. The reading may involve selections and stories that are tied into learning more about our "BIG QUESTIONS/IDEAS." These are questions/ideas that guide the learning process and should be something that all students understand at the completion of the unit. Skills We will be working on several new skills during reading this quarter including main idea/details, summarizing, point-of-view, and written response, and character traits. Response to Reading During workshop, I hope to include more chances to respond to reading in a more productive way. This includes summary writing, different points-of-view, and responding to comprehension questions using new vocabulary and parts of the questions. Journaling Students will respond to different story elements weekly to help them with comprehension. The journaling questions are started on Monday and will be due on Friday. See the pictures on the left. ACCELERATED READER The link will take you directly to our AR website. This is where students will take quizzes related to the books they have read. AR is a requirement in our class. The results of these quizzes are compiled and used for a comprehension grade. It is essential that students read during workshop and at home to work towards their AR grade. I will assign each student a reading point goal at the beginning of the year. Each student will get a book level. Please be aware of this book level, as students will need to be reading books within the level to ensure the maximum benefit of independent reading. https://hosted156.renlearn.com/139412/ The above is the link to our AR homepage, where students can log in and take their quizzes from home! (log in information will be coming soon!) The link below allows parents, teacher, and students to check the reading level and point value for any book. AR BOOK FIND Please check this website to find out information on any book http://youtu.be/4GNaXDjpBas Click the link above to watch my son demonstrating his version of "reading the pictures." Students will learn 3 ways to read a book during "Read to Self" time. Please ask your child what the 3 ways are....They should be able to tell you 1) Read the words 2) Read the Pictures 3) Retell the Story. |
